Really annoying
I know it's not everyone's idea of sport but I noticed last night there was a bit of boxing on the BBC, pretty short lived that after tuning in it was announced that the main bout was two women, something which I do not agree with. A couple of supporting matches, one reasonable the other, well I had to look twice, they were both tipping the scales at well over 20 stone and it resembled one of Attenborough's documentary on elephant seals. Anyway I digress a little, the main point that really is so annoying is the preamble to any of these events. I believe it started of with boxing but has of late migrated to include snooker and darts, to name but two others, my dislike is the introduction of the combatants and this ridiculous way in which they are announced. The names are drawn out to a time span which would leave any normal person gasping for air, that coupled with the customary walk from the dressing room, about a mile away, with the accompanying crescendo of little known "music", played on what sounds like a Dansette record player. Really ridiculous that yet another stupid palava started in the USA has permeated into British TV

Funnily enough there was an item on TF1 about the sport of Catch (Professional Wrestling) which is pure theatre and for entertainment. I'm sure everyone remembers Big Daddy (Shirley Crabtree) ??
The item featured Kira Chimera who is trying to encourage women to take up the sport. She was taught in the UK, which apparently is the place to learn the sport. She teaches men and women and it was clear that all the participants were having great fun. It's all carefully choreographed, with moves practised to ensure no-one gets hurt. This video shows a mixed bout, with Chimera and a man - you can see them laughing !
Sure, it isn't everyone's cup of tea, and whilst they look as if they're thrashing the daylights out of each other, it's all playing ! The women are usually well-padded which goes down far better with the crowds than some skinny model type.
There used to be huge objections to women playing football and rugby, but they're both incredibly popular here in Brittany.

As someone who doesn't give a damn about sports of any kind, I find it easy enough to avoid the coverage. The problem is the advertising breaks between programs I want to see and during a program of say 30 minutes you get four or five commercials meaning you get maybe 20 minutes of what you actually want to see. Just like the products they are selling, the bombardment of ads strengthens my resistance to buying any of it.
Hughnique's point about stupidity being imported to UK from the US has been true for decades. I have been wondering why all the darts players appear to be very overweight and more than a few are sporting Mohawk haircuts. At least the snooker players look human.

On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Some of the French channels only have adverts between programmes, particularly in the evening. There are an annoying number of ads around news/weather times and they're either aimed at selling cars, or at oldies (genre Stannah, hearing aids etc). We just kill the sound and use it to get a drink, loo or whatever.
Darts was just a pub game in the UK and Ireland and the Americans adopted it when they were over here during WW2. However, it was televising it in the 70s that it became such a huge cult.
The dressing up and crazy styles are just part of the fun !

Blimey Blaze you wouldn't want her pinning your shoulders to the canvas, likely to suffocate, liberal spray of femfresh hopefully.
Hotrodder I am sure we are soulmates of some sort.

I feel just the same about adverts, Hotrotter, and as for what these “influencers” are about, touting this that and the other I just don’t know - why can’t people make up their own minds? it’s very lucrative for the “influencers”, I gather.

We never watch TV ads as I check the programmes for the day at breakfast and record any that may interest either of us. We then watch at a suitable time skipping ( ->) any ads. The Humax is ideal for this as skipping can be done rolling continuously at a choice of speeds or in thirty second jumps. Programmes can be set to record as many days ahead if shown in the schedule.
