It really galls me

In town pedestrians have a right of way across marked crossings & knowing this step out onto them with no warning & without looking to see if there's traffic approaching.
I've no problems with their priority but it really galls me when I'm slowing in anticipation of them stepping off the pavement & the miserable b's just wander across the road without even looking up & acknowledging my presence.
Doesn't take much to raise a hand or a smile in thanks .
Whatever happened to common courtesy?

I have a theory - motorists are more respectful than non-motorists when pedestrians - waving a thank you, looking out for traffic, and crossing quickly if there is a car.

Serious business crossing the road as a pedesstrian, even though I always acknowledge a motorist who stops for me, sometimes only with a finger... Still, there's a 30km/hour limit here, so they ought to be able to stop quickly.

Must be a regional thing, down these ways people always pause at a crossing and thank a stopping motorist. I must admit that this was because in the past cars just ignored crossings and pedestrians wouldn’t risk life and limb and the mindset of the drivers morphed, positive progress.

30 km/hr speed limit here for vehicles but I swear some pedestrians move faster than that when, with their backs turned to oncoming traffic, they just step out into the road.
A driver has no idea if a selfish imbecile is going to attempt suicide by car so most drivers almost come to a stop at every crossing where there is a pedestrian within a pace just in case.
We've got cameras on each vehicle so proof if an imbecile does step out without looking but I'm not sure how this would work out in law. It wouldn't be the first time a vehicle has had to be lifted off a pedestrian in our town.

I got caught in the school rush time yesterday - horrendous. However, at a zebra crossing and children coming out of a small opening by a high wall (impossible to see them until the last minute), I was very impressed at how many of them gave a smile and a wave at me for stopping.
Generally people aren't bad round here. Our village has humps all over the place so people are forced to go slowly.

Its a mixed bag around here. A simple wave of acknowledgement reinstates my faith in human decency. Most often received these days when I pull over as far as I can and slow down to aid an HGV coming the other way down a narrow lane. I have never driven one myself but I do understand they have a much tougher job avoiding problems in tight spaces. I see so many people just press on just because they have right of way causeing an HGV to brake, assuming a forty tonner can stop on a centime.

I try my best when approaching a crossing, but it is never enough as one time I was rammed from behind for doing the right thing and several times (mostly on a market day) I stop and discover those standing at the roadside at the crossing are having a chinwag with friends and not actually wanting to cross just then.
