Blackout perhaps. when a big ship blacks out (power loss) there is no control over direction and no brakes. Having spent a few years on BIG ships, I can assure you that Blackouts are frequent. With pilots on board there will be two or more generators online, but a fault on the main board will pull the power off and trip everything.

Apparently American bridge engineers have described the design as flimsy.
I wonder however how a large span bridge can be anything else. How would the Humber Bridge stand up to a massive impact on one of its piers? The only saving grace being that there the water by the piers would not be deep enough to get such a vessel that close.
I also wonder whether the piers were protected with some sort of deflecting coffer arrangement - and if not, why not.
