A French person emailed me and said he would be arriving « fin am »
What time would you reasonably expect him?

Avant midi, unless you've invited him to lunch!

Fin matinée (fin am) usually means just before midday hereabouts.

I would have read that as "fin après-midi", say about 17h onwards. "am" round here definitely means afternoon, not morning !

Blaze is correct - he turned up at 17.00 and fin am means fin après midi. It caught me out. By the way Sue I am in 56 too.
