Mask wearing most effective

Watching part of ITV news the other night (Tom Bradby is one of the best news readers in my opinion!), he was asking their health reporter, Emily Morgan, about the chances of UK lockdowns this Christmas, and looking at what was happening in Europe. She explained, in her view, that the UK peaked again a little while ago, as so many people were due to be having their boosters (thus previously vaccinated were becoming equally susceptible to the virus), other European countries are seen to be peaking now, as "our" time for boosters is a little later. She reckons there won't be a UK lockdown - and Tom Bradby noted that and said he'll quote her on that later if need be!

Are cases rising because too many people thought (think) the pandemic is over and it's "party on"? Even the adverts imply that it's all over and time to get out and mix, hug, swap spit et cetera, et cetera! (Yes, I know, that's gross!

)

I suspect there are many reasons - vaccines wear off after six months but some countries are crap at arranging boosters (sadly I live in one such country) or people don't take them; idiots think mask-wearing is no longer necessary - like the youngsters I see on the buses; lack of distancing - especially where mask-wearing is not mandatory like the Christmas Fair here and everywhere in the UK.

A stitch in time, springs to mind - reintroduce controls now before things get too serious not later after they have. UK as well.

Some governments and "the people" seem to think they know more than medical experts, researchers, scientists ..... Cases are continuing to rise because people aren't using of masks, distancing etc. If they did, there would be no need to consider lockdowns.

We are not due our boosters until mid-January. As we had AZ, we're going to be ultra-cautious from now on. There are mixed messages about how low protection drops to after 5-6 months, so we don't intend taking any risks.

I guess the next question will be "How long will the Booster be effective?" Is this going to become a six monthly thing? My booster is due at the end of this month. The only place I'll need to go where a Pass Sanitaire is needed would be hospital - and I'm due there for an extra scan session in February, so will need one for that.

Otherwise, I'd probably not bother, tbh. Happy to mask up anywhere else where necessary, and can count on one hand those who I'm near when unmasked, and two of those are family, and they don't go anywhere else either. My biggest risk is clients - but we keep our distance anyway, as they're getting quite frail. I don't like to admit it, but I've had some pretty wierd headaches since the AZ vaccines, so a tad concerned about getting boosters every six months.

I had AZ and I have been getting atypical headaches too. Anyone else?

OH a little bit - but with him, we have the question as to why he's suddenly become hypo-allergic to anything red meat, when normally this is only after a tick "bite", and he hasn't been aware of one. Absolutely no mammalian meat now - not even a couple of pieces of chorizo on a pizza.

Neither of us has had headaches or any other side effects after AZ. France no longer issues AZ so any booster will be Pfizer or Moderna.
It's unwise not to go for the 3rd vaccination because quite apart from the restrictions that the government will impose, after 6 months, the vaccine will offer less protection.

There are still unknowns about the virus and whether or not we might need a booster every year. At the moment we have no way of knowing how things will be this time next yea. After all, who would have imagined we'd be where we are now a year ago ?

I think Israel demonstrates the drop in protection.

I would be interested in a long-term study into the relative effectiveness of boosters with the same and different vaccine types.

I am eligible in 2 weeks - but the rules still are over 65s or medical needs - so trying to persuade my doctor to give me the latter - otherwise as I am in UK at Christmas (hopefully) I will get one there as my other two doses are registered on the UK system.

I'm waiting for the hopefully re-opening of our pharmacy before applying. It is murder trying to get a rdv with the doctor these days.
