The Chinese claim they can detect Covid more reliably with samples collected from elsewhere. Maybe Europe should adopt the same measures?

Nope - as Head of AZ was explaining on R4 - but he claimed with the OAZ vaccine T cells are "primed" so when you do contract it then it will be less severe. He also claimed (MRD applies) OAZ better primes than the RNA Vaccines.

Here is a better report on this (I missed out some bits - which all goes to show men cannot multitask and read e-mails and listen to R4 at the same time):

He told the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme: "You have two dimensions to this immune response... one is the antibody response and two is the so called T-cell response.

"And the antibody response is what drives the immediate reaction or defence of the body when when you're attacked by the virus.

"And the T-cell response takes a little longer to come in. But it's actually more durable. It lasts longer.

"And the body remembers that longer. So you see on to everybody's focused on antibodies, but antibodies you see them decline over time."

Mr Soirot said: "What remains and is very important is this T-cell response.

"And as soon as the virus attacks you, they wake up and they come to the rescue and the defend you and but it takes them a little while so you may be infected, but then they come to the rescue and you don't get hospitalised and it's really interesting when you look at the UK, the there was a big peak of infections, but not so many hospitalisations relative to Europe.

"In the UK, this vaccine was used to vaccinate older people. Whereas in Europe initially people thought the vaccine doesn't work in older people."

Our daughter has just been notified that her op. due next week in Birmingham is postponed as they are all too busy in ICU. I wonder what with?

Well I guess there are two considerations - are there so many more ill people blocking the same number of ICU beds or are there just fewer ICU beds for those who are ill to occupy?

Thank you. She has been waiting several years for elbow surgery and was given this latest appointment only a few weeks ago. My comment was you'll be lucky which unfortunately came to be too true. I suspect massaging of waiting list figures.

Presumably ITU beds are being taken up by Covid patients, so operations are postponed, creating a backlog.
It's hard for your daughter, Wilbro, particularly if she's already had such a long wait. The anticipation of finally getting a date then to have it cancelled

Of course Dr Soirot has a commercial interest. More impartial experts dispute these findings. It is also worth noting that despite what he claims Germany and France did give AZ vaccines to over 65s. I had AZ myself.
