It's also highlighted the French lack of hygiene, particularly hand washing. Let's hope that what is being instilled into children today will stick ...
Not only the French I suspect many like me have realised that they didn't wash their hands often enough.
I also discovered the first time I went shopping with a mask on, that I used to lick my fingers to open the plastic bags for veggies.

In our local supermarket at the check-out yesterday, its always at the check-out, a young man and woman and young child got a bit too close to my back and started putting their shopping down on the conveyor belt right next to me. I politely asked him to move back and keep his distance - l had to ask twice before he did and, with his mask under his nose started to rant rather loudly how he was fed up with being told what to do and that he was no longer free to do anything. This went on while we packaged and paid for our shopping and as we went to move away he made a remark about 'etranger merde'. Madame OBR, who is French, gave me her "You dare" look and guided her rather angry old man out of the store.

I often wonder about how much contamination takes place at supermarket and other shop tills as patiently queuing at a distance seems reaĺly difficult for a lot of shoppers in this part of the world.

I notice that at the self-service tills in the Co-op here, the cleaning after each customer has long since ended, and I could not tell you the last time I saw a terminal being sprayed and wiped down.

Maybe studies have found it ineffective - or maybe complacency has set in?

Surface contamination has been shown not to be a major source of infection.

Our Auchan proudly proclaims that its surfaces (not just tills but also those chill/freezer cabinets that have to be opened) are cleaned down at least 3 times per day - probably what they did in the past pre-covid.

So did I, it was the only way I could get the blessed things open, but I have solved that now. I only buy stuff that is priced by the package (bananas), single items that I can put the sticker on (carrots, onions, parsnips, lemons etc) and every thing else I buy from the market where the customer is still there to be served. Or I go without.

Mind you those bags were useful for clearing up after the dogs when I used to take them to the public park area. ;)
I didn't lick my fingers afterwards btw.

I have solved the bag opening problem. When forced to go shopping I always have a little bottle of the antibacterial gel in my top pocket. A little dab of that to make the thumb and index finger sticky does the trick. Also handy to use immediately after opening those glass cooler doors.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Just polishing my green halo . . . . I use those recyclable net bags with a drawstring - and put the sticker on the back of my shopping list

Just be careful when using the bags with those little holes punched in to prevent kiddies from suffocating. :-)
