Mask wearing most effective

For a demonstration of the effectiveness of masks, watch this short video.

So longer answer too Pachapapa; Although a mask cannot stop an individual bacterium or virus particle, the main form of transmission is of multiples of bacteria or viruses held in droplets (large and small) and the mask will stop the majority of these droplets. Anyone infected will then have the vast majority of his/her virus load contained by the mask.

For the uninfected however the effectiveness is less. I am sure we are all aware that over time masks become damp to wet. If an infected person deposits droplets onto the outside of the mask, the moisture can provide a route through the mask and could lead to infection.

Mask wearing is therefore very much about protecting other people.
