Char, it might be interesting for some readers - I happen to know one - to see pictures of the inside of this fuse box, now a little electric heater. And the way your helpful ENEDIS technician - if he gives his permission - repairs of replaces this Coupe Circuit Principal Individuel (CCPI).

I forgot to update this 
I didn't get a photo because I was out shopping when they came.
Box was full of black powdery stuff where it had been getting hot.
'twas a wire that had come lose and they just fixed it back in place - OH said it just looked like some sort of fuse box inside.
The leccie people were surprised at how old it was, but said it wasn't necessary to replace it, but at least I can run the washing machine and cook at the same time now.

Char, a simple black box without secrets, two fuses inside, technology without an interesting name (TWAIN), so it's electronic multi-tasking time since then. Although an electric heater in front of the meter might have been cost effective next winter looking at electricity prices in Europe. Shock absorber in France: le tarif bleu EDF.
