Yesterday brought that familiar cry, "we need some shopping", normally that results in a mad spree costing over a hundred euro, at our local Super U. Off we trot, Netto first, then the rest in Super U, normally for stuff we can't get in Netto, on entering the car park at SU, we remarked on the lack of cars, therefore it would reflect on the numbers within the store, which indeed, was the case. This particular branch has been having a refit, for at least the past year, new fridges and freezers, as well as shelving all round, resulting in the scenario that you can't find a bloody thing, and it now takes twice as long to get a few bits, often new aisles are taped off and men are working on erecting stuff, or the shelves are being stocked up with items, as was the case yesterday. However, I know the ambient outside temperature was quite warm, but walking around, in the air conditioned atmosphere within the shop, we noticed that, without exception, every fridge, freezer and cold cabinets, had a copious amount of condensation on the outside of the doors, lids, or whatever glass was attached to it, there also seemed to be an unusual depletion of stocks within these items. I have never known a re-fit to take so long and cause as much disruption as in this store, brand new cold storage units with broken glass ends, backs etc. just left in situ, not a hint of hazard tape.
Think it might be time to give Intermarche another try

Isn't it a marketing strategy to confuse the customer so they have to visit all aisles and do impulse shopping?

@hughnique I don't like SuperU in St Junien, which also had a major refit last year (too big for my taste, although OH loves it). We shop at the BabyU (U express) up the road where all the staff know us and we know many of the customers.
As for empyness, few customers anywhere on a Tuesday and if you watch the news you'll see why there are some gaps in provisions.

I went to Asda in Lancashire after work the other Monday and the gaps on the shelves especially in fresh produce were amazing

And it's not just bricks and mortar establishments either. Zooplus.fr stocked out of Felix sachets a couple of weeks ago for around 10 days. I tried the .be, .de and .co.uk sites and the same story. They got them back in last week but stocked out again over the weekend. Back in stock once more - but for how long? I go through around 25kg per week and this is the time of year when I start to increase our stock to cover weather related interruptions in supply.

Our nearest Aldi shut down for over a year for a refit. When it reopened very few people went there, and it is still not as busy as it was previously.
Seems they shouldn't have made people find an alternative.

Its that time again. They are shunting things around to make room for the Xmas crap that carries a much higher profit margin. It has started already around here.

I normally go shopping at opening time on a Monday when clients are outnumbered by staff stocking (Intermarché). They have just finished a refit and although some was done overnight it was still a long time and much disruption. Now I don't know where many things are and it is taking time to adjust. I do like to be able to shop as quickly as possible.

Be comforted that when you can't find stuff after a refit, the staff have the same problem !
@hughnique I know things change with time, but we always found the SU in Longé brilliant, especially the wine section. I remember when they did their first expansion ...... We avoided the one in Vernoil because they used to buy in stuff that was very close to (even over) the sell-by date. We didn't rate the one in Baugé either.
It's surprising how much they vary - our nearest SU gets top marks here over the others.
