@niemeyjt "A shotgun is unlikely to cause a death except at extremely close range"

The problem is it is unlikely to kill a sanglier either - very cruel to shoot large mammals with shotguns.

I think the hunt director got off too lightly, at least the killer was sorry
How do people live without at least one dog in the house?

They both got off too lightly. If a similar thing happened whilst driving, say drunk or dangerously it would be prison. Why are hunters so protected? They are a minority.

Mmm. One of my sons was recently driving a pool car to pick up a girl living in the foyer where he works. Dark, rainy night. A car smashed into them from behind and son's car skidded and then rolled, landing on its roof. The other, disqualified, recidivist driver was drunk - 6 x over the limit. He appeared in court the next day and was sentenced to another 4 months imprisonment (he was already under a suspended 2-year suspension) to be spent at home with an electronic bracelet. Nothing was added to his disqualification period.
The accident could have been fatal; as it was, son and the girl had only scapes and bruises. They had no say in the criminal proceedings but son is planning to berate the justice system in the civil proceedings. Said oik should have been banned for life from driving and yes, Wilbro, gone to (actual) prison.
The sad reality is that those who should be locked up aren't, and some who shouldn't are. There aren't enough prisons and there aren't enough non-custodial solutions.

Yes you are right Mad. However, fortunately there were no fatalities but had there been it would maybe have been a different story. Nevertheless your son is right and should berate the system. A ridiculous sentence and it makes a mockery of so called justice.

Biggles, (who has forgotten his P/W), would like to say "Don't confuse the weapon with the ammunition". If you search for '12G Sabot rounds', you will be shocked to find shotgun ammo that is lethal @ 100m and would probably leave its mark @ 150m!

@MAD87 What is also ridiculous is that you can insure for this. Adding to his disqualification period would probably change nothing - judging by the number of uninsured = unlicenced drivers on the road in France, it's uncontrollable/unenforceable. What they should do is confiscate and destroy the vehicles of offenders. Too often we hear "Oh we can't ban him, he'd lose his job" ... But prison, definitely, because he's a danger to the public, but as you say, MAD, not enough prisons and not enough non-custodial solutions.

I did so and found https://ammo.com/bullet-type/sabot-slug which suggests the slug could be lethal at more than 150m, as it will be accurate (group well) at over 200 yards
A French friend told me of a case where someone (unknown) fired one of those slugs in the air. It went through the roof and first floor of a house a considerable distance away.

Well yesterday we had our annual OAP lunch and entertainment event. Main course pommes de terre dauphinoise with a rich venison stew. Venison donated by the local chasse. So they are not all drunken layabouts - well excepting those who attended the lunch - much vino provided as well.
