If I had a gun pointing at me, held by a policeman leaning against my car with his finger on the trigger, the last thing I would do would be to try to drive away, possibly hitting his arm so that he could accidentally fire the weapon.

BTW, something similar happened to me once. I used my brain, and survived, while a very apologetic Algerian policeman asked me not to take the matter any further.

Some policemen are not adequately trained, and can become very nervous when they think they are being confronted.

He's got no brain left now thanks to a French policeman. I read somewhere that there is a pattern of young boys of colour being shot dead here in France during traffic stops. Shameful. I doubt any type of training will stop that.

We don't know what else was going on in the car. There were two others I believe. One still at large.
He had a record and had no driving licence.

I wonder what my friends in the Gers make of it? Their son is a policier in Agen and was kneecapped by a voyou three years ago. After two operations and ongoing rehab, he's still not fit to go back to work and has lost three years of normal family life. The court case came up last month and the voyou got off scot-free as there were no witnesses. Would he be trigger-happy in a similar situation? Probably....I know I would!

Sorry Mangetout, but they are usually the ones who refuse to stop! The Police = The Enemy, so ther's no way they'll do as they say. I read in one (French) report that the car was stolen and that this was the 5th time this young man had failed to stop whilst illegally driving.
Nonetheless, I've felt for a long time that French police training is deficient, not only in crowd control but in relations with the public.

Question - are they stopped because they are of North African origin or because they were driving a stolen car with no licence or insurance?

A broader analysis of the figures is required - not just based on anecdotal evidence I think.

And very sad that some who should know better are bandwagon-jumping based on one distant movie filmed on a phone rather than a proper investigation.

I've always been uncomfortable with the systematic arming of police. Not everyone is suitable for such a responsibility, however good they are at their job.

Without the video, a very different version of events could be circulating, particularly if there were no credible witnesses.
Was the policeman being threatened, was his life in danger as some reports suggest ? Were his actions justified ? Will we hear the true facts of what happened ?

There was a move to equip the police in France with body cameras but it doesn't yet seem to be standard procedure/obligatory. In the Nanterre incident, a body camera could have given vital evidence ...

It's a circular argument used by many. You stop mostly young male immigrants, ergo they are the ones who refuse to stop.
And can you blame them if they get shot. Unless of course you are suggesting that all criminals are of North African descent?As for facts, official figures show that there have been 2 killed already this year in the same way, and many more in recent years.

Whatever the truth is behind the shooting the resulting destruction is just bloody minded vandalism. Why should innocent people have their property destroyed by the usual, any excuse to cause trouble, morons?
