Gender neutrality gone mad

exile wrote: Fri Aug 04, 2023 11:22 am I am not trying to justify what reads as very poor use of English, but is it possible that the case was still sub judice? Until the fine is paid, the driver always has the option of going to court. As such anything that might help identify the accused (including ther sex) could land the newspaper in court.

I have just recently seen on the TV another case where this threat has created what seems to be a nonsense in the reporting. It seems two groups of people fell out with one another and a small riot broke out, with a victim lying in the middle of the street being kicked and other throwing what seemed to be bottles at the perpetrators. All had been captured on a mobile phone. When broadcast the faces of those involved had all be blurred out. Sub Judice was quoted as the reason.
We saw that too on Look North Hull.

That's the one.

@Blaze I fully agree that your version is much better and meets the requirement but the journo has been perhaps told that [he should ensure that the article is gender neutral - delete that] the article should be written in a gender neutral way.

@exile I would go further and say that perhaps it's been written with a tongue in cheek way to pacify the PC brigade !!
In which case the journalist deserves more credit that I gave him !!

Nothing to do with sub judice. The journalist could have referred to the person concerned as, e.g., 'the driver'. Perhaps these days journalists are just shown the outside of journalism schools or of universities....?

perhaps you missed the point I was trying to make. If an under 30 year old is told to write something as gender neutral, it will probably have a different slant to what you and I understand - ie gender neutral = they, theirs, them to such whippersnappers.

At a local school a pupil identifies as a donkey.

He uses the pronouns He/Haw

It seems that some schools, at least, are putting their feet down.

In her letter to parents, deputy headteacher Claire Hughes wrote: "It has come to our attention that there appears to be a number of queries and concerns raised within the community regarding the use of litter trays at West Monmouth School.

"I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that we do not and will not be planning on providing any litter trays at the school.

"Whilst we are an inclusive and welcoming school, we do not make any provision for any pupils who might identify as an animal of any kind.

"This kind of behaviour is not acceptable at school and as such, no provision is in place at school, such as litter trays."

Torfaen Council said the letter was sent out after "rumours and misinformation" were spreading online.
