The thing you put in the base of a saucepan of boiling water that the pudding or whatever then sits on to prevent contact with the base of the saucepan.

I thought it was a trivet - but pictures on the internet suggest otherwise.

TIA

I've always called it a trivet or steamer insert. They also are called steamer racks

We once used a saucepan lid as a trivet. Big mistake. A vacuum formed and we couldn’t get the bloody thing out. OH had to drill a small hole in the lid.

My grandma used an old saucer (the right way up). I remember doing that as well as a student.

"dessous de plat" is what you use for not to burn your table when putting on it a very hot saucepan or dish from the oven, like :
https://www.amazon.fr/Dessous-de-plats- ... d=58402031
What you are looking for is called "insert vapeur", "panier vapeur" or "cuiseur vapeur", like :
https://www.amazon.fr/s?k=insert%2Bpour ... nb_sb_noss
Demain est le premier des jours qu'il nous reste à vivre: profitons-en ! :D

I've always called it a trivet : it can be used inside a saucepan or as a stand for hot dishes etc.
