We actually had a little snow last night, fairly unusual for this area.
The fuss they are making on the news about the cold seems a bit over the top. It is winter and temperatures around or just below freezing are hardly unusual. "Oh it hasn't been as bad as this since 2018 ..." Yes, it does depend where you live, but life goes on.
The people I feel sorry for are those who've been flooded out of their homes and the further damage that could be caused by freezing temperatures.

+ the fact that they can't heat/dry out those homes. Awful situation.
It is indeed a song and dance about normal January weather - freezing temperatures and snow.

Those were the days......Early in the morning, no fear of flying over almost black/dark blue ice, the first one to take the floor. Only sweet memories? Climate change? The press continuously hunting for something new to get your attention and trying to make money from advertising?

Yes, terrible for so many people have been flooded out of their homes, some have had it happen several times, and so many businesses have suffered that too.

I suppose that the mild weather so far this winter has meant that falling temperatures are really noticeable, but some headlines have really exaggerated this chillier period.

I’m enjoying the sunshine today, forecast to continue for several days.

We needed to drive to Maidenhead yesterday and all 3 roads to Sonning on our side of the Thames were closed - it’s somewhere we often visit and have never known that before. Presumably the Thames has really flooded widely this time!

While at Maidenhead I felt a few light drops on my face, which turned out to be a few tiny snowflakes, which then became large flakes floating like down. I was pleased to see it began to whirling around thickly and it lasted for hours.

Lots of small children were jumping about when we passed our local primary school - such excitement, but alas not enough snowflakes to make a snowman, not even a snowball.

At last, frozen ground, no more mud and slosh for a while. Lovely snow on the ground changes the scenery for the better.

I tried kicking one over to disperse it. Bad idea. Almost broke my toes and as it lifted it ripped a big hole in the lawn down to the dirt below.

The frozen race that may never return...... In 1963 Frisian skates (top-of-the-line this Juliana type) were still quite common for the 9500 touring participants, including my father. The 575 in the race itself preferred Norwegian speed skates. Early in the morning minus 16 degrees, a lot of wind. Frostbite, frozen limbs, frozen eyes....
