Not expecting this much we had no idea what to say. The bungalow was at the end of a very narrow lane and the lane split at that point for access to two other properties each side. The driver had reversed up the lane to get as near as he could. There was no access onto the plot so we had to let him dump it there. It was about 4:00pm and the owners of the other four houses would start arriving home from work from about 5 onward so the two of us had to barrow it from the pile through a small gate to the bottom of the garden where it would be kept until needed. Thankfully the plot sloped down from the gate. We managed to reduce the pile that was blocking the lane enough that the returning neighbours could get past. A killer of a job for a man in his 70's and me of slight build. He pleaded ignorance that "a load" was a full six cubic yard tipper lorry.

The manure joke........
........on the Jokes thread reminded me. I was staying with my grandparents helping them get settled in to their newly acquired bungalow near Folkestone. He had ordered a delivery of manure (bulk not sacks) and it was to arrive after lunch. A tipper lorry turned up and I climbed up on a rear wheel and looked inside and asked how much is for us? "All of it" was the answer, "where do you want it?"

On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

The manure joke........
Amazing coincidence. In my case, I had ordered 10 ton of sterile from the local quarry and the driver thought he could back down our steep track to dump it where I needed to make a car park. I had my digger to shift it and we had planned to have the work done on the Friday it was delivered, rest over the weekend and get a second load of 10 tons to finish off on the following Monday. All went well and the pile (which ended up 13tons) was duly dumped. The lorry then tried to get back up the steep track, but slid partly off down the side of the track where there is a cliff drop. With help from a local farmer the lorry was removed after Two hours landscaping the track with the sterile that I needed for the car park. The damage caused by the lorry to the track supporting wall was another 2 days unplanned work. the quarry company was apologetic and within the hour delivered another 13 ton for free. This time at the top of the steep track blocking the track altogether. Our afternoon work started late and then we had double the work to clear the track. Even with the use of the digger and tractor I spent the weekend knackered. Indeed, once one gets close to 80, one tends to get tired early and I still had the wall to rebuild.

The manure joke........
The above brings back memories of when we had the pool delivered by a driver who was off his face.

Been there and played my own version of that game.
Ordered the ingredients for 4t concrete.
Told the company that the access was narrow and they should use a small delivery truck.
Inevitably the truck could not get to us so discharged (dumped) the load 100m away - and some 10m lower down. It does not sound like much until you are well into double digit barrow loads.
That was a long and hot day.

And my 'heap' moment
... I ordered a lorry-load of topsoil to be delivered. Mentioned that I would prefer the heap to be tipped at the bottom of our plot, but I doubted that the steep, grassy chemin was dry enough. 'No problem' according to the young, gung-ho driver. He reversed down alright, but couldn't get back up, even with an empty lorry. After much wheel-spinning and slithering, his solution was to career off onto our neighbour's field, luckily en friche, and drive round in ever increasing circles until he shot off across her lawn onto the tarmacked chemin further round
She was very understanding about it
He's since been back, about ten years older and wiser, but hadn't forgotten the experience and was more than happy to tip the load at the top of the slope
