Having got over the Fosse problem we now have the continuing saga. These rubbish flush mechanisms that are fitted to all of out toilets here and have an annoying habit of, once the flush is operated, not seating back properly and a continuing waterfall is initiated which becomes apparent next time you visit the loo. Any tips on how to cure the problem.

Ours has done that from day one. I can't face the prospect of fitting another, not knowing if the quality will be any better so we just "fill as needed" using the little tap where the water enters the cistern. Continual cistern leakage fills our fosse over time and costs money.
One day we'll maybe have a lottery win and get someone in to fix a few things.

Adding a bit of weight to the part that drops to shut off the flow usually works.

All four of them and having, in the past fitted replacement and been confronted with the same problem in a matter of weeks, makes you a bit reluctant to shell out, are they all the same fitting then?

Toilet problems, common repairs.

When one of our toilets kept flowing I replaced the rubber flapper. Sometimes cleaning is enough. This one was showing it's age: irregular form and missing fragments around. where the water pressure was felt. They come in many different sizes, there is no one size fits all agreement between the thousands of producers. Our mechanism is from the 80s, no spare parts of course. In a toolbox I found a more or less usable rubber ring (example), had to cut it to size. Inner and outer circle, the thickness was okay. That was seven years ago, still a perfect seal.

I have a problem with a faulty seal in the toilet flush mechanism. I used to turn the feed into it off to negate problems of it not sealing. I have found that when it does not seat properly if I ‘blip’ the cold tap in the bathroom or kitchen on for a split second, the resultant drop in pressure in the system allows it to seal.

The problem with turning the water off to the tank until you want to flush is that the residual water in the cistern runs uout and the rubber seal dries out, making the problem worse.

Ah! Sounds like a different fault to our toiet where the overflow runs when it shouldn’t. Intermittently.
When the cistern is full it remains full until flushed.

In that case 2 possible solutions.
Check that the float ( these days usually a lump of foamed polystyrene) is not catching on the side of the cistern or elsewhere. Bend the wire connection away from the cistern wall.
Cut down the height of the central column - it is usually marked off in 1-1.5cm bands. 1 measure will probably do the trick.
