There but for the grace of god............

That' sort of the point I was trying to make.........when I left school in the 70s and joined Lloyds Bank O'seas in the city of London, what passed as 'banter' between the east end 'barrow-boys' in the dealing rooms and the pools of 'essex girl' typists would have got most of the blokes arrested now. Including me.

Times change and yet as a young man in the 60's I worked in Yorkshire in an all male office with others of a similar age. The language and sexual comments were to say the least "industrial".
We were over an office with a lot of young women and also secretaries some of whom were girlfriends including mine. If one walked into our office no-one dreamed of swearing or making sexual comments and the same applied on social occasions.
Yet "effing and blinding" seems to be acceptable these days by both sexes, young people and as the written word in newspapers , other publications and on tv.I
It's over the top and could this be one of the reasons why some people think their loutish/intimidating behaviour is acceptable?
It's a strange world we live in.

It seems he hasn’t grown up and noticed changes in what I’ll call ‘acceptable behaviour’, how powerful men have been brought low when people spoke out. He obviously still thinks that his conduct is acceptable.

His latest words remind me the vice-president elect of the USA speaking disparagingly about ‘childless cat women’, which created a backlash.

Or maybe he did notice the change - but was given the impression by BBCand others that he was too big a "star" to have to follow it?

Years ago I worked as a temp for a short while at the John Brown Shipyard in Glasgow - it was no holds barred on the shop floor but much more retrained in the white collar worker section !

The change could be partly down to good manners becoming less natural/automatic/instilled/taught/applied etc. today. Women haven't always done themselves favours by trying to be "one of the boys". That said, there's a difference between banter and vulgarity and what matters is knowing the difference and when to stop.

I've worked mostly in an all-male environment and only once been treated badly. The boss knew who I was working with and re-organised things without my having to give any details.

Personally I think identifying the difference between banter/ vulgarity could be as simple as someone thinking would I be happy at my mother,daughter,wife hearing this
