Is that the shortest term of French PM? I try to understand, but it's all beyond me - he seemed to upset everyone from the moment he was elected. Yet he seemed quite level headed during the brexhite proceedings. Macron to address the nation tonight, 9pm our time I think.

Well with the Notre Dame reopening they need a PM in place. As the downfall of Barnier was so predictable one must hope Macron has already given it some thought and been sounding people out.

I could be wrong, but I think Macron will nominate the new Prime Minister tonight, especially to have him at his side at the inauguration of Notre-Dame on Saturday. He wouldn't want to face Trump's mocking smile in the shoes of a President who doesn't even have a government anymore...

Given that the same fate is likely to await the next PM, isn't it more a case of 'who is willing to take on the job'? Of course, if ex-PMs keep the perks of the job afterwards, like the President, there'll be no shortage of candidats.

Given all the criticism and attacks that can be expected, I doubt that anyone with any intelligence or honor would accept the job. Moreover, journalists and social networks make the situation worse.

Absolutely right Q. That is one of the problems that has never been addressed : payments/perks/expenses for politicians and their families for life. For example Mme Giscard is still living (aged 91) and still entitled to a bodyguard and doubtless other perks. Why ?
Just think of what F. Holland and N. Sarkozy are getting every month for the rest of their lives.
Then all the special régimes .....
This is the country that likes to think of Egalité ...... or perhaps that some are more equal than others ....

This is exactly what happened in the 2nd round of the legislative elections: due to the alliance of the Macronists with the far left, their voters voted AGAINST the RN. Result: they put in Marine Le Pen's hands a dangerous tool called censorship !
LFI has already announced that they will censor any new Prime Minister who is not from their camp. In which case, Le Pen will have power again
