Syria - what next?????
Well, it looks as if it's started : the newly appointed Justice Minister in Syria has been named as Shadi Alwaisi. He intends to remove all women judges and all the courts will be lead by men (needs to be verified, but it's all over internet).
It was inevitable that Syria would go from the frying pan to the fire with the extremist rebels (HTS) in power - you only have to look at their history.
Removing women from the judiciary is just the tip of the iceberg.
Will this put an end to any consideration of removing HTS from the list of terrorist organisations by the UK government ? It rather depends what the UK government think they could get out of negotiation with HTS ....

Rumours also abound that Russia has done a deal to keep its bases as well.
Seems bizarre given the role Russia played in maintaining Assad.

Money and maintaining power. Would anyone really believe in loyalty or 'honour' amongst world leaders when circumstances change?

There are still no articles in "serious" western publications about the appointment of Shadi Alwaisi as Justice Minister so perhaps a pinch of salt ....
As usual, all the photos of crowds celebrating in the streets seem to be predominantly men, photos of women seem to be rare. Perhaps years of repression discourages them from speaking out.
I do not believe the new regime will allow women any more freedom than they have now - and that isn't much as many of the laws discriminate against them. It's only a question of time. Getting rid of Assad may be a relief for the moment, but the Syrians don't know what's in store for them under the new rebel regime.

And Libya and Iraq don't seem too good after their regime change either.
Let us hope at least the worst aspects of Islamic regimes elsewhere are avoided.

The recent visit to Damas by the Foreign Ministers of France and Germany has showed that religion comes before diplomacy, and could be seen as a bad sign :
Syria's new leader put out his hand to Jean-Noël Barrot but put his hand on his heart to Annalena Baerbock. Although this is unusual, it is not unheard of but it marks the gap between the treatment of men and women.
