No reason given and we are well aware of all the things to avoid when having the photo taken. We assumed photo quality at the time but now suspect it was simply the fact that it was a French booth. We checked the photos before we sent them off and they looked fine to us.

I'm with hughnique on this subject. I'll just go to a pro photography shop and get them done, like when I needed one for the Carte de Sejour. I beat my head against the wall for weeks last year when Transferwise wanted more I.D. after many years of being a client. I just couldn't manage to get a photo accepted. They wanted my mugshot while holding my piece of identity next to my face. Totally impossible to do this and get both of them in focus. So ended my association with Wise.
Needless to say, I have never taken a photo with my mobile and managed to send it anywhere.

My passport ran out years ago but I think I may need a new one before my Carte de Sejour needs renewal. A chore that can wait until I have a reliable email and power supply organised.

Yes, when we got our cartes d'identité and also when I applied to renew my Irish passport, we used a photographer who had a program with all the major countries and their photo requrements. €10 each, so no big deal.

I took OH's passport photo with my camera (no smartphone in those days). You slide the photo onto the website and they'll tell you if it is acceptable or not. The photo was accepted.
I will renew my passport next year and will probably do the same.
