@ Hotrodder: even when we use AI to reduce your previously published photo of your Sprite to its essential forms, it still looks impressive. Not a go cart at all. In fact, it’s the kind of thing a lad’s dreams were made of. At least, from the perspective of a European who has rarely even laid eyes on a proper Chevrolet V8 or anything similar in those days, let alone driven one or had the budget for one in the first place.

Where have all the Citroën icons gone? The Traction Avant, the 2CV, the AMI, the Citroën HY, the DS and in a last effort to hit the headlines again and produce something that would be engraved in "la mémoire collective" of the French and many others, the SM. Almost the end of Citroën's existence. Another try: an absolute icon is coming back. On 21 May 2026 in Detroit, during the Stellantis Investor Day, Citroën officially announced the future launch of the electric 2CV on the European market. The manufacturer with the chevrons logo has unveiled a simple, affordable and desirable electric car.

Good question, the same car body with an electric engine, a battery pack and better brakes? This remains largely a mystery. So far, the public has only been treated to a promotional trailer, including two impressive black horses galloping through Paris, that ends with a silhouette of the car featuring illuminated headlights. Some journalists - the happy few, inner circle, no cameras allowed - have already been able to catch a glimpse of the bodywork, which mimics the design of the original: a curved, ribbed bonnet, a rear end with a slanted window and boot, and slightly protruding headlights. The door handles and bumpers also resemble the original version, but may still need to be adapted to meet safety standards.
We already saw several modified 2CVs on the road, in the UK, the same old body work, and a heavily modified version, a Berlingo=2CV, tested in Germany. And now we are waiting for Citroën's own design, to be produced in Italy in 2028. Let’s hope that, before then, we’ll at least be treated to a few images of the real new icon before it hits the market. What about a future 4x4 version?
