Leaving your body for medical research

There’s always a need! And what good is your body to anyone when you’ve gone?
I’m starting the process to leave my corpse to the Limoges Fac de médecine where my daughter was trained.

Follow the instructions carefully (there’s a model letter) and make sure to let family/friends know as it has to be done quickly after death. I’ll be informing my GP too.

Burial or cremation is taken care of by the centre accepting the donation.

I'd thought about it until a couple of months back I read that somewhere in France there were bodies that had been left for research piled on top of each other and rotting - kinda put me off but I can't remember where I read it possibly on the journal ouest-france?

Maybe not medical research but there was a wonderful story a few days ago about a 26 year old who has just run the Paris marathon. He was born with mucoviscidose / cystic fibrosis and had a lung transplant in 2017 which has saved his life.

Giving one's body to medical research or organ donation can be life-saving, and once you're gone, you have no need of it. That said, obviously for transplants, young and healthy organs are vital.

When my best friend died in 2016, at the tender age of 52, she left her body for transplant donations where possible. Unfortunately, as she was riddled with ovarian cancer, no organs were used, but her beautiful blue eyes were passed on to two different people. It's an odd sensation to think that her eyes now belong to two people - still living and seeing the world.

I think it is only the corneas at the front of the eye - not the rest.

My best man received two new corneas - after welding splatter damaged the "originals" and his contact lenses did not fit.

They think that was how he contracted the CJD that killed him (a nasty death).
