I have just looked on the map and it is almost exactly on the straight line between our first guesses of Chamonix and Aix-en-Provence (took a bit of a liberty there since I could not place Ste Victoire exactly with my tracking system though I know where it is).
Where is this in France ?

I think that is close enough Dominic.
It is actually Villette - about 2km north.
The line was originally built to transport the anthracite coal down from the high plateau to the valley where the anthracite was transhipped from the narrow gauge St. George - La Mure onto the standard gauge lines to Grenoble and further. When the mines shut, the line was reborn as a tourist line with some impressive impressive views. All that ended in October 2010. One of the impressive views was between two short tunnels and called le Balcon because the line was on a bridge just a few metres away from the cliff face that plunged below to the lake created by the creation of a hydroelectric dam. An estimated 3000 cubic metres of rock peeled off the cliff above and crashed down onto the line. The line shut and remained so until July this year when a curtailed service restarted from La Mure down to just before the rock fall. In fairness this is the more scenic section.

Well done both of you. It’s a lovely place to visit and it’s been in one family since I believe the C14th. I can’t look at that photo without hearing cow bells in the background.
