There seems to be another trendy habit regarding the size of things in general, every thing is related size wise to the size of something else. For example, as big as six football pitches, four Olympic swimming pools, or as high as ten double decker buses, what happened to feet and inches, metres and centimetres, these comparisons work if you are au fait with the actual dimensions of the comparison object.

Me & the missus are always remarking on that. Seems more & more prevalant these days.
On the other hand, short distance by time seems perfectly acceptable as everyone ,well most save the pedants, seems to know about how far a '10 minute drive into town' is.

My BIL Jean-Pierre, who drives like a speed merchant every time we get in his car and seems to get enormous pleasure from my holding on for dear life and Janines constant pleading to slow down, says those signs are an open challenge and allows him to emulate his favourite all time F1 driver Emerson Fitapaldi.

Comparing size is completely different to giving measurements and allows more people to understand the size of the thing being talked about.
