'Some people call this car an old banger', Cees (80) uses his MGB Tourer for what it was intended: driving. In the early 1970s, Cees Verstraate bought his dream car: a 1968 MGB Tourer. Since then, the convertible has been his constant companion and the source of countless stories. One of them is about a holiday to the Czech Republic. His mate
(no, not this one...) was behind the wheel when the motorway suddenly ended and a sharp bend followed. The car skidded and started to spin. Cees laughs when he thinks back on it. ‘We were lucky there was nothing on the verge.’
His love for the MGB began during his bachelor days. A friend drove one and Cees thought it was a beautiful car, but far too expensive. He himself had his eye on a Triumph Spitfire: just as sporty, but more affordable. However, things turned out differently.
Over the past 52 years, he has done a lot of work on the car. Not just minor repairs, but complete engine overhauls. ‘I had to replace the first engine after just one year. And that happened several times after that. Maybe it has something to do with my driving style.’ Will he ever be able to part with his MGB? His answer is resolute: ‘No. The car will have to say goodbye to its owner.’
Keep them rolling.
