I don'regard my comments as inverted snobbery: I'm an ornnery gal from a poor home who'os worked in England with people who utter such nonsense (not "over the top" in WW1 terms), and I hope I've kept my sense of proportion.

@MAD87 My comment wasn't aimed at you ! I've seen inverted snobbery endlessly in military circles where stupid assumptions are made, i.e. "they're not like us". But equally I've seen military wives put on ridiculous airs and graces which are just laughable.
People will sometimes try to puff themselves up to give themselves more confidence. I've come across a fair number of Brits in France who have clearly reinvented themselves. It's depressing when you find out that you've been fed a load of lies.
