Comparing size is completely different to giving measurements and allows more people to understand the size of the thing being talked about.

I will of course bow to your superior knowledge but as a mere engineer I haven't a clue how many football pitches it'll take to cover my 2.5 Ha field or how many times bigger my lawn is to an Olympic pool.
I can of course find out this information & do the maths but what a faff. It'll work with every day small objects such as "the size of a fag packet" but when you get to large dimensions ??????

The problem is, like with gallons, the Americans use a different sized Football Field to a European one.

I have only been a passenger once with a French driver.
It was a proper white knuckle ride.

A very wealthy local family we know quite well are as tight as duck's arses. Father drives, is as blind as a bat but won't pay for glasses & daughter dear refuses to waste money on repairs to her car's inoperative screen wipers.
A builder pal of mine knew about the family & was chaufered by the dad to one of their rental houses in daughters car which got caught up in a downpour on the return . He was shaking & soaking wet when they finally made it back home having spent the whole 10 km per hour trip navigating with his head out of the back window. White knuckle ain't in it. Being a passenger with either is deffo a brown trouser affair.

I've often tried estimating how many football pitches would fit into our paddocks, but since I really don't have a clue how big a football pitch is, it's a fairly useless estimation.

Plus, I just found this: 'According to FA regulations, the dimensions must fall between being 90-120m (100-130 yards) long and 45-90m (50-100 yards) wide.' So, the area of a pitch can be anywhere between 4050 and 10,800 square metres or, in old money, between 5,000 and 13,000 square yards. That to me seems about as accurate as the proverbial piece of string!

100m x 100m = One Hectare (i.e. 100 Ares)
Imperial.
One square mile equals 640 acres..... away you go

Oh yes, I know one of those. He drove 3 of us to a singing practice, and as we approached a roundabout started accelerating without clearing up to his left. There was car on our left already on the roundabout. We all shouted "STOPPPPPPP"", which fortunately he did, just in time At that time we knew he was a drinker but hoped he might refrain on practice nights. We have never gone with him again (surprised ?!)

I worked at the gendarmerie for 6 months a while back and I can't say that their driving is anywhere near the standard taught in the UK. The concept of advanced driving is completely unknown.

The worst driving I've seen around these parts are Brits who haven't read the code de la route and don't know the rules - we even saw one manoeuvring itself backwards and forwards so that he could drive round the roundabout the wrong way one day. So there are bad drivers of all nationalities so let's not use this thread as an excuse to bash the French please.

I can understand that better than I could if you gave me the measurements, I've never been able to 'picture' a distance or size with out a comparison. If you told me something was ten miles away, I wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about.
